O God, the proud are risen is surely one of Tomkins’ finest anthems, sumptuously scored in eight parts. At the words ‘slow to anger’ the pace of the music slackens in an intense series of overlapping scales, before building again to a suitably ringing conclusion at ‘and great in goodness and truth.’
