Thomas Tomkins

Thomas Tomkins (1572–1656) was born in the Welsh city of St Davids, where his father was a vicar-choral at the cathedral; by 1594 the family had moved to Gloucester. Thomas was appointed organist of Worcester Cathedral in 1596. At some point he must have studied with William Byrd, whom he described as ‘my ancient, & much reverenced Master’. Most of his church music was published in the monumental collection Musica Deo Sacra, which was issued posthumously in 1668.
